Where to Stay in Galena, Missouri

How to choose between downtown Galena, Table Rock Lake, and Branson, from the folks who run the cabins by the Y Bridge.

Planning Your Trip

Galena at a Glance

Galena is the county seat of Stone County, a small Ozarks town built along a bend in the James River. It is about 30 minutes northwest of Branson, 20 minutes from Table Rock Lake, and under an hour south of Springfield, which makes it an easy home base for the whole region.

Because the town is small, you will not find big hotels here. Lodging in and around Galena is mostly cabins, vacation rentals, and riverside campgrounds. The right choice depends on what your trip is built around: the river, the lake, or the shows.

Best for float trips, walkability, and groups

Downtown Galena, on the James River

Stay right in town and you can walk to dinner, the Y Bridge, and the river. This is where the Cabins at James River Landing sit, two blocks from downtown with the water at the bottom of the steps. Outfitters in Galena rent canoes, kayaks, and tubes, so a float trip starts minutes from your door.

Best for boating and lake days

Table Rock Lake

Kimberling City and the north shore of Table Rock Lake are about 20 minutes south. Lake rentals and resorts make sense if your trip is built around a boat. Many guests stay in Galena instead and drive down for the day, then come back to a quieter evening on the river.

Best for shows and hotel options

Branson

Branson has the most hotels and the most to do after dark, from the Strip to Branson Landing to Silver Dollar City. The tradeoff is traffic and crowds, especially in summer. Galena is about 30 minutes northwest, close enough for a show and far enough to sleep quietly.

Our Recommendation

Stay on the River in Downtown Galena

We are biased, but there is a reason most of our guests end up wishing they had booked more nights. The Cabins at James River Landing are five elevated cabins on the bank of the James, two blocks from downtown and a short walk from the 1927 Y Bridge. Each one has a full kitchen, bathroom, in-unit laundry, and a private deck with rocking chairs.

The Nest (Cabin #5) has three bedrooms and two bathrooms and sleeps 12, which works well for families. Cabins #1 through #4 are cozier one-bedroom cabins for up to 5 guests each, a good fit for couples or small groups. Book several together and the shared deck and fire pit make it feel like your own private camp. See our private cabin rentals page for more on group stays.

From here you can float the James in the morning, drive to Branson or Table Rock Lake in the afternoon, and be back on your deck by sunset. Read more about the town itself on our Galena, MO cabins page, or plan a paddle with our float trip guide.

Beautiful riverfront! We saw lots of wildlife outside, enjoyed evening walks to the Historic Y Bridge, and did a little fishing with the kids. Close enough to the busy attractions without the noise and lights. So peaceful watching the fireflies at night! Great recommendations and communication from the hosts.

We cooked a lot of homemade meals from the kitchen and played games at the large table. We loved that the location is so close to the float trip experiences — but even better, you get your little piece of heaven in your backyard! We fished from the rock island, grilled, and enjoyed the fire pit. An incredible experience we will definitely stay here again!

It's spacious, comfortable, and well thought out — ideal for large families. The views from both balconies are beautiful and peaceful. What really set this stay apart was the hospitality. We met Dr. Phil, the owner, and he was so kind and genuinely cared about making sure our stay was perfect.

This cabin has a great location right on the river with easy access and several outfitters nearby for a float trip. The cabin is very clean and well maintained — we have never had an issue and we come back every year to stay here.
